Holistic Wellness Guide

Posted on May 23, 2015 at 8:24 AM Comments comments (56)

list of 20 Healthy Living Tips to help you maintain and improve your health. For more information, search our Newsletter Articles (the search function is on every page.)
  1. Avoid microwaved food, non-stick cookware and aluminum cookware (used in most restaurants as well as homes).
  2. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water everyday. Drink between meals, and finish your fluids 2 hours before bed.  Use a reverse-osmosis water filter, a Big Berkey water filter, or buy Spring water.
  3. Check food labels for the word “hydrogenated” and eliminate all hydrogenated oils. Dressings, mayo, “butter spreads”, baked goods, cereals, pre-prepared, fried foods, and most restaurant foods usually have these.
  4. Use coconut oil, ghee (clarified butter) or leftover fat from pasture-raised meats for sautéing. Avoid heating olive oil and other oils – use them to flavor food after cooking. Choose oils high in monounsaturates and low in polyunsaturates. Avoid corn, canola and soy oils.
  5. Grate or puree squash, cauliflower, broccoli and other veggies to make them taste differently, freeze better, and get more nutrition per bite.
  6. Buy and eat Pasture-Raised eggs – the highest quality eggs you can find.
  7. Replace starchy foods such as bread, rice, cereal, pasta, beans and chips with vegetables. Avoid juice and excess fruit. Combine fruit snacks with some fat and protein such as organic cheese or almond butter.
  8. Have a solid breakfast with plenty of protein and fat. Eat meals and snacks at regular times every day.
  9. Avoid pesticides in your food, your home and your yard.
  10. Eat wild salmon frequently (canned is OK). Take premium quality Omega 3 oils – we prefer emulsified fish oil to fish oil capsules.
  11. Eliminate Iodized salt and regular Sea Salt. Look for Sun-Dried or Solar salt such as Himalayan Salt, or our Pink Salt.
  12. Remember that sodas, granola bars, muffins, most rice and soy milk, desserts and potatoes are extremely high in starch and sugars (and therefore calories). Artificial sweeteners are no good either…
  13. Never eat soy again unless it is fermented as Miso, Tempeh or true Tamari Soy Sauce (Gluten-Free). Avoid all Gluten, and try going Grain-Free as well.
  14. Walk at least 3 times a week for 20 to 30 minutes. Keep your heart rate to 55% – 75% of your maximum heart rate (determined by your age).
  15. Avoid electromagnetic field toxicity. Remove electric clocks from your bedside table (use battery operated instead). Don’t sleep or work near a fuse box or other electrical appliances. Don’t put anything electrical on or near your head. Use cell phone protectors to diminish EMF fields.
  16. Sleep 7 to 9 hours in a pitch dark bedroom; kids too. Use herbs such as Passion Flower to help calm your brain and body. (You can use Passion Flower during the day too to help keep your busy brain under control).
  17. Alcohol is pure sugar and pure calories, makes you sleep badly, and keeps your blood sugar unstable.
  18. Whatever you cook, make more of it! Double up meats and veggies and freeze for later in the week.
  19. Get plenty of sun on exposed skin (but don’t burn). Or, take 2000 to 5000 units of Vitamin D3 with a meal, daily, for life. Have your Vitamin D levels tested annually and keep them between 55 and 75.
  20. Change your hair and skin care products to eliminate Sodium Laurel Sulfate, Parabens, Wheat, and Fragrances.

GABA

Posted on March 22, 2014 at 6:17 PM Comments comments (46)
Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is the most abundant inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain.  It serves to fill brain receptor sites so that other messages cannot be transmitted.  It works with the B vitamins niacinamide and inositol in that capacity and, for that reason, they are added to this formulation.

While GABA is an amino acid, it is classified as a neurotransmitter (a substance deposited at the end of nerve cells that is then picked up by other nerve cells in order to send nerve impulses throughout the brain and nervous system).

GABA is known to induce relaxation and improve restful sleep.

These are INDIAN HERBS AGAINST HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE:

1. Ashwagandha (Withania Somnifera or Winter cherry) – is good for using for long time period as a good support toning therapy for people with heart problems of any kind, including hypertension of “Vata type” (it is Ayurvedic term).

2. Amalaki or Amla (Emblica Officinalis or Indian Gooseberry) – has many antioxidants, which prevent the development of atherosclerosis, thus lower cholesterol. Also Amla purifies and cleans the blood.
...
3. Bibhitaki (Terminalia Bellirica or Bahera) – also has a good property of reducing cholesterol. As high level of bad cholesterol can be the main reason of high blood pressure and heart problems.

4. Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna or White Marudah) – helps reverse hardening of arteries, helps against coronary artery disease. Arjuna acts against hypertension, enhances the elimination of cholesterol.

5. Brahmi (Centella Asiatica or Gotu Kola) – Brahmi is the most sattvic and spiritual plant.

In Ayurveda Gotu Kola is called “a memory herb”. Clinically proven that G.K. reduces blood pressure, frequency of contractions of the heart muscle and improves peripheral circulation.

The last effect is explained by the action of bioflavonoids, which this plant contains. They are essential for maintaining strong health.

6. Guggul (Commiphora Mucul or Indian Bedellium) – also lowers blood cholesterol levels. Clinical studies have also found that guggulsterones are especially helpful for people who have high cholesterol levels because of kidney disease. In the treatment of arteriosclerosis it is useful in reducing existing plaque in arteries, which narrows the arteries, thus the pressure goes high.

7. Hawthorn (Crataegus or White Thorn). In Ayurveda as well as in Western medicine the Hawthorn is a recongnized treatment for diseases of cardiovascular system. It improves blood circulation, strengthens the heart muscle, lowers cholesterol and promotes longevity. Helps against high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, heart arrhythmia (irregular heart beats). Impoves blood flow and oxygen (with red blood cells) to the heart. Also treats arteriosclerosis.

8. Gokshura (Tribulus Terrestris or Puncture wine) – quite effective for heart problems like angina. Effective in reducing blood pressure level, hypertension and blood sugar. Helps against severe headache and migraines.

9. Neem (Azadirachta Indica). Recent studies have shown that Neem reduces blood cholesterol level and keeps the heart healthy.

10. Karela (Momordica charantia). It helps in lowering blood sugar levels and also helps in suppressing sugar out flow in urine, helps to attain supportive sugar regulating outcome by suppressing the neural retort to sweet taste stimuli.

11. Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis). Treatment for high blood pressure with Shankhpushpi: Take fresh swaras of Shankhapushpi 10-20 mg. every morning and evening for some days to get rid of high blood pressure

Essiac Tea

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 3:51 PM Comments comments (64)
ESSIAC TEA

How It Works
Essiac is a product that is composed of 4 or more herbs, two of which (Sheep Sorrel and Burdock Root) are known to kill cancer cells. The other two herbs build the immune system and deal with detox and protecting the organs.
Essiac Tea
Essiac Tea is a long proven method of  helping to cure cancer. It dates back to the 1920s and before.
While the basic components of Essiac are well known, the exact proportions of the herbs in Essiac are the matter of much speculation. The cancer patient should be far more concerned with the quality of the herbs, and the quality of the processing, than with the exact formula. Some brands have 4, 6 or 8 herbs (e.g. Flor-Essence has 8 herbs). The extra herbs won't hurt, and may be of some help. But again, the quality of the herbs, and the quality of the processing, is the most important issue.
It should be mentioned that it is the Sheep Sorrel that is the main cancer killing herb in Essiac. Sheep Sorrel has been known about for over a hundred years as a cancer fighting herb

Spirulina

Posted on February 27, 2013 at 3:43 PM Comments comments (43)
Spirulina Benefits

Spirulina is a simple one-celled microscopic blue-green algae with the scientific name Arthrospira platensis. Under a microscope, spirulina appears as long, thin, blue-green spiral threads. The odor and taste of spirulina is similar to seaweed.Spirulina can be found in many freshwater environments, including ponds, lakes, and rivers. It thrives best under pesticide-free conditions with plenty of sunlight and moderate temperature levels, but it is also highly adaptable, surviving even in extreme conditions. More than 25,000 species of algae live everywhere - in water, in soils, on rocks, on plants. They range in size from a single cell to giant kelp over 150 feet long. Macroalgae are large like seaweeds. Microalgae are microscopic. Ocean microalgae, called phytoplankton, are the base of the ocean food web. Spirulina is often deemed the most nutritionally complete of all food supplements, containing a rich supply of many important nutrients, including protein, complex carbohydrates, iron, and vitamins A, K, and B complex. It also has a high supply of carotenoids such as beta carotene and yellow xanthophylls which have antioxidant properties. It is also rich in chlorophyll, fatty and nucleic acids, and lipids. Thus, spirulina has countless uses as a supplement for maintaining good health and for preventing diseases.Spirulina is the richest beta carotene food, with a full spectrum of ten mixed carotenoids. About half are orange carotenes: alpha, beta and gamma and half are yellow xanthophylls. They work synergistically at different sites in our body to enhance antioxidant protection. Twenty years of research proves eating beta carotene rich fruits and vegetables gives us real anti-cancer protection. Synthetic beta carotene has not always shown these benefits. Research in Israel showed natural beta carotene from algae was far more effective. Natural is better assimilated and contains the key 9-cis isomer, lacking in synthetic. As suspected, natural carotenoids in algae and vegetables have the most antioxidant and anti-cancer power.Spirulina is an ideal anti-aging food; concentrated nutrient value, easily digested and loaded with antioxidants. Beta carotene is good for healthy eyes and vision. Spirulina beta carotene is ten times more concentrated than carrots.Iron is essential to build a strong system, yet is the most common mineral deficiency. Spirulina is rich in iron, magnesium and trace minerals, and is easier to absorb than iron supplements.Spirulina is the highest source of B-12, essential for healthy nerves and tissue, especially for vegetarians.Healthy Dieting with SpirulinaAbout 60% of spirulina’s dry weight is protein, which is essential for growth and cell regeneration. It is a good replacement for fatty and cholesterol-rich meat and dairy products in one’s diet. Every 10 grams of spirulina can supply up to 70% of the minimum daily requirements for iron, and about three to four times of minimum daily requirements for vitamins A (in the form of beta carotene), B complex, D,and K. By itself, it does not contain vitamin C, but it helps maintain this vitamin’s potency.Spirulina is rich in gamma-linolenic acid or GLA, a compound found in breast milk that helps develop healthier babies. Moreover, with its high digestibility, spirulina has been proven to fight malnutrition in impoverished communities by helping the body absorb nutrients when it has lost its ability to absorb normal forms of food.Another health benefit of spirulina is that it stimulates beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria in your digestive tract to promote healthy digestion and proper bowel function. It acts as a natural cleanser by eliminating mercury and other deadly toxins commonly ingested by the body.Spirulina also increases stamina and immunity levels in athletes, and its high protein content helps build muscle mass. At the same time, it can curb hunger that may develop during the most demanding training routines. Thus, it indirectly acts as an effective way to maintain an athlete’s ideal body weight. The Disease FighterAs well as beta carotene, Spirulina contains other nutrients such as iron, manganese, zinc, copper, selenium, and chromium. These nutrients help fight free radicals, cell-damaging molecules absorbed by the body through pollution, poor diet, injury, or stress. By removing free radicals, the nutrients help the immune system fight cancer and cellular degeneration. In some findings, spirulina has helped reduce oral cancer tumors in laboratory rats, and may thus provide a big medical breakthrough in cancer treatment.Spirulina’s ability to reduce the bad cholesterol LDL in the body helps prevent the onset of cardiovascular diseases, such as hardening of the arteries and strokes. It also helps lower blood pressure. While not clinically proven, spirulina may also protect against allergic reactions and liver infection.Research confirms Spirulina promotes digestion and bowel function. It suppresses bad bacteria like e-coli and Candida yeast and stimulates beneficial flora like lactobacillus and bifidobacteria. Healthy flora is the foundation of good health and it increases absorption of nutrients from the foods we eat, and helps protect against infection. Spirulina builds healthy lactobacillus, aiding assimilation and elimination and relieving constipation.Removing ToxinsIn 1994, a Russian Patent was awarded for spirulina as a medical food to reduce allergic reactions from radiation sickness. 270 Children of Chernobyl consuming 5 grams a day for 45 days (donated by Earthrise Farms), lowered radionucleides by 50%, and normalized allergic sensitivities. Today we are subject to an onslaught of toxic chemicals in our air, water, food and drugs. Our bodies need to continually eliminate these accumulated toxins. Spirulina has a completely unique combination of phytonutrients - including chlorophyll, phycocyanin and polysaccharides, that can help cleanse our bodies. How to Take SpirulinaSpirulina is now commercially available in tablet or powder form. Some health tonics contain spirulina as part of their ingredients. A simple daily regimen for spirulina involves taking a 500 mg tablet four to six times daily.Sources for these forms of spirulina are normally laboratory-grown. Harvesting spirulina from more natural settings has posed a challenge because of possible contamination from toxic substances that cannot be removed from the product. Hopefully, more eco-friendly and safer ways to cultivate the algae can eventually be developed and perfected.
